South Devon is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB), situated on the south coast of England.
It is a popular holiday destination due to the picturesque scenery, heritage and various activities on offer to visitors.
Historic market towns, idyllic thatched cottages and village pubs accessed via forgotten Devon lanes provide a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of life elsewhere. It allows the visitor to enjoy life at a slower pace and to indulge themselves in their surroundings. South Devon is famous for its clotted cream teas, beef and red earth!
Salcombe is sheltered inside the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary, with boating activities, ferry services, museum attractions and coastal walks on offer. It retains its peace and quiet by favouring the pedestrian over the motorist.
Salcombe was, and still is, a seafaring town. The sea trade peaked in the 1860s when it was home to 100 or so schooners (most of them locally built) shuttling to the Bahamas, the Mediterranean and the Azores for exotic fruit for the home market. It was a tough but lucrative business if you survived, and profits from the trade provided the cash for many of the substantial Victorian houses you see today.
